Score 96/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Jun 2024

The 2019 Peñas Aladas Clarete had a much longer élevage and will be released after the 2020 and sold as Gran Reserva; it might be released in October/November 2024. It is surprisingly darker, more structured and more serious, with depth and complexity, closer to a lighter red (or a white!). It has notes of rose petals and decayed violets and is very serious and more vinous, with lots of finesse and clout. It took a very long time to ferment and finished with 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.1 and bone dry, with a strong stony, mineral sensation. It's surprising and fresh, and it transcends the category. It sells at the same price as the red. 679 bottles and 41 magnums were filled in December 2022 after it spent 51 months in barrel.
