Score 88/100 · Drink 2003-2010, Robert Parker, Aug 1993

The deep ruby/purple-colored, well-structured 1986 displays intense, deep, rich blackcurrant fruit, and copious quantities of new oak. It is a big, powerful, fleshy wine with considerable complexity and appeal. One of the stars of the vintage, it is just beginning to blossom. Anticipated maturity: Now-2003. Last tasted, 6/93.

The 1986 La Fleur de Gay does not quite have the cohesiveness of the 1985 on the nose, but it still has attractive dark berry fruit, Tiptree strawberry jam, wild mint and molasses aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and quite compact considering its age, with good structure and definition but lacking vivacity toward the strict, buttoned-up finish. Tasted June 2011. Tasting note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.
