Score 91/100 · Drink 2003-2012, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2002

The 1999 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Durnsteiner Kellerberg offers intense smoky mineral aromas as well as a light to medium-bodied character filled with gravel and apricots. While it lacks the tropical influence and hedonistic appeal of the 2000, this is an outstanding wine of depth, purity, and power. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012. Harvested in early December. Pepper, citrus rind, flowers and peach in a ripe, almost heavily scented bouquet. Glyceral and dense in the mouth, but with the alcohol not noticeable. An enormous load of minerals is here folded into billowing, honeyed melon fruit. The finish positively sizzles with white pepper and tactile minerality, yet brings its own cooling antidote in waves of peach and melon. Complex notes of peach pit, orange zest and coffee complete the picture.
