Score 95/100 · Drink 2030-2045, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Nov 2025

Devil Proof’s Rockpile Ridge Malbec is usually barrel fermented, but for the first time in 2023, 30% of the wine was fermented in concrete. “This is the first vintage we had enough tonnage to evaluate two different extraction methods,” Hillary Sjolund, director of winemaking, explains. “The concrete provided great focus and length to the wine. The finish in particular is lifted with a minerality we don’t normally see in Rockpile.” Matured for 22 months in 100% French oak, the 2023 Malbec Rockpile Ridge Vineyard Block 5 is singular and expressive. It floods the senses with waves of boysenberry, licorice, incense, sage, iron and violet. The full-bodied palate features layered, fantastically spicy flavors. It has a seamless frame of suede-textured tannins, bright acidity and a long, iron-laced finish. 356 cases were made.
