The 1997 Cabernet/Merlot Abbotts Prayer possesses a tart, acidic profile, with cranberry, red currant, and cherry aromas. More reminiscent of Pinot Noir than ripe Cabernet and Merlot, this is a tartly-styled offering from what tastes like a cool microclimate. Importer: Negociants, USA, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 259-0993

Ruby-red. Sweet redcurrant and plum aromas complicated by notes of maple syrup, violet, tree bark and fruitcake, plus a faint sweaty quality. Lush flavors of red berries, leather and rust, plus a peppery element. Finishes with slightly dry tannins, but the tannins spread nicely over the palate. This struck me as rather Old World in its style and tannins, though the aromas were a bit odd.
