Serralunga d’Alba. Certified organic (CCPB). Bottle 341 of 711. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Rich cherry-fruit nose and still a little subdued. Aromatic, intense, juicy cherry palate with bags of gravelly tannins, and the perfect match for the concentrated fruit. Very long and mouth-filling and boisterous at this stage. (WS)

One of four single-MGA Barolo, the Lazzarito is bright and intense to begin with, showing wild red berries and intricacies of forest flora. While the palate is less persistent, it is beguilingly nuanced by rosehip tea and salty minerals. The tannins are fine, even a bit delicate for this typically powerful site. Rather discreet overall but balanced and harmonious. Fontanafredda’s Mirafiore label revives an historic Italian brand that was among the first to export wine globally. Today, it focuses exclusively on estate-owned vineyards in the Langhe – primarily in the township of Serralunga d’Alba.
