Score 92/100 · William Kelley (Robert Parker), Jun 2025

The Fontanabianca 2022 Barbaresco Bordini shows fragrant aromas of dark cherry, cassis, orange peel and crushed stone. This hot-vintage Nebbiolo is approachable overall, despite a drying tannic bite that builds in astringency. This mid-weight Nebbiolo sees three months in cement and 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks. Bordini is the estate's historic parcel with 60-year-old plants, south-facing exposures and proximity to the moderating air currents of the Tanaro River. Production is 8,000 bottles.

Neive. Mid to dark maturing ruby with orange tinges. Dark fruit and spice; already beginning to develop a little but the nose certainly has depth. Much more backward on the palate with a thick layer of chewy, rustic tannins that are really present but do not overpower or dry out the fruit. Needs more time for the tannins to settle. (WS)

Moving to the black labels, the 2022 Barbaresco Bordini is a medium ruby red hue and offers more introspective notes of dried cherries, dark stones, sappy herbs, and hints of leather and porcini. The palate exhibits good ripeness and retains freshness at this stage, with ripe tannins providing a notable grip as the fruit begins to give way, and a robust feel throughout the finish. Drink 2026-2040. It might just need a little time to come around and improve.
