Score 96/100 · William Kelley (Robert Parker), Jan 2026

The Piero Busso 2019 Barbaresco Gallina Viti Vecchie offers a contrasting personality, with sweeter-feeling tannins and a tightly knit texture shaped by the sandier soils of Gallina. Despite extended maceration and long aging, the wine retains a more primary and youthful profile compared to Albesani, emphasizing clarity and precision. Produced from vines planted in 1953 and aged for three years in large oak followed by three years in bottle, this limited release of 958 bottles highlights Gallina’s refined and textural elegance.

The 2019 Barbaresco Gallina is the most easygoing of the three 2019s I tasted for this report, and also the most forward. Worn-in leather, tobacco, spice, menthol, dried herbs and dried cherry fruit are all suggestive of a wine with early tertiary characteristics. Even so, the 2019 has enough depth to drink well for at least a handful of years. (AG)

Notes of ripe berries and plum skins with hints of cloves, cocoa and hot asphalt. Medium- to full-bodied with a compact tannin structure. Firm and lengthy with red and dark berries on offer. Lightly chewy and viscous at the end. Drink after 2025.
