Poured first among the three single-vineyard Barbarescos, the Gaja 2023 Barbaresco Costa Russi immediately establishes itself as the most delicate and finessed of the trio. It presents a more classical, old-school expression of Barbaresco with beautifully lifted aromatics that are especially expressive on the nose. The palate mirrors that elegance with silky, exquisitely polished tannins that carry the wine effortlessly across a long, graceful finish. Rather than relying on power, the Costa Russi succeeds through finesse, harmony and extraordinary textural refinement.

Barbaresco. MGA Roncagliette. Just mid ruby. More perfumed and lifted than the straight Barbaresco. Super-elegant palate weight and with aromatic raspberry fruit and finely ground, persistent tannins and supple acidity building a real unity on the finish. Walter Speller

The estate made all three of its crus in 2023, albeit in smaller quantities. The Costa Russi is in its full floral element, exuding lavender, mint blossom, iris and dried, pressed rose – subtle beeswax and brushwood accents only add to the intrigue. A charming, red-fruited palate sees raspberry boosted by blood orange zest and spicy sage. Rather vertical in flow, its suede-like tannins lend textural tension and a girdling grip that holds this together. Bottled in December 2025.

Elegant and fresh, showing refined violet candies, wild strawberries, red currants and licorice alongside subtle, smoky wood and citrus leaves on the nose. Full-bodied, firm and velvety on the palate with graphite flavors. Juicy and crisp, savory and long. Drink or hold.
