The Gaja 2023 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn feels as though it needs more time to fully reveal itself. There is a nervous energy that has always characterized this wine when tasted young, suggesting that its best years are still ahead. The bouquet is beautifully delicate with floral notes, elegant red fruit and a distinct mineral character marked by hints of iron and rust. A subtle saline note emerges with air, adding another layer of complexity. Although less immediately expressive than the Costa Russi, the Sorì Tildìn possesses the structure, tension and underlying depth to flesh out beautifully with further bottle age. This is a wine still very much in the making.

Like Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin hails from the Roncagliette sub-district though the latter sits above this vineyard. Its sun-soaked exposition is felt in the greater overall density and textural richness. Brooding for now, reluctant aromas suggest crushed stone, rust and incense. With coaxing, an exotic spice note emerges. The palate demonstrates more of its lurking exuberance – the wild forest brambles infused with mint and liquorice. Tannins glide on the entry, building with chalky layers as graceful as they are secure. Fills the mouth but never weighs it down.
A restrained wine with fresh lemon-tree aromas, showing licorice root, subtle graphite and smoky wood, alongside wild strawberries and dried cherries. Full-bodied, juicy and elegant on the attack, with thick tannins on the midpalate. Muscular finish. Drink or hold.
