The dark ruby-colored 1999 Clos de La Roche boasts dark cherry and black raspberry aromas. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and opulent, this is a plush, satin-textured, penetrating wine. Its layers of candied black cherries and raspberries penetrate the palate. This is a lively, extraordinarily long, well-balanced, and seamless offering. Medium-ruby, a bit brighter than the Clos Saint-Denis. Very closed nose hints at briary berries and mocha, along with strong new oak. Very full and rich; the most voluminous of these '99s to this point, with lovely sweetness and seamless texture. Finishes long, with well-buffered tannins, impressive sweetness and a new oak component that became stronger as the wine unfolded in the opened bottle. This is totally different in style and texture from the Clos Saint-Denis, but though much larger-scaled and more serious, I'm not sure it offers the same clarity of flavor.
