(40% new oak): Bright violet color. Fresh raspberry and cherry on the lively floral nose. Spicy and incisive on the palate, with sappy red fruit liqueur and floral pastille flavors underscored by juicy acidity and a subtle vanilla nuance. A smoky mineral note adds bite to the finish, which hangs on with repeating florality. In an elegant style and very appealing now.

Deeper, richer and with another notch on the texture scale, the 2012 St Joseph Clos de Cuminaille has terrific notes of black raspberry, cassis, toasted spice and roasted meats. Medium-bodied, ripe and textured, with notable purity and acidity, it’s an impressive Saint Joseph to drink over the coming 7-8 years.

100% Syrah. Brilliant crimson. Very high toned. Reminiscent of the regular bottling on the nose but with more concentration on the palate and lots of fine tannin on the finish. Solid stuff for future development. (JR)
