(from 50-year-old vines; vinified with 60% whole clusters): Healthy bright red. Musky red fruits plus a hint of game on the nose. Quite sweet and silky but the flavors of red fruits, dried rose, pepper and spices are given shape by pungent saline minerality. Finishes juicy and quite firm, with lovely lingering red fruit and spice flavors. Really communicates the crunchiness of the vintage's better examples but will need time to unfold.

The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Bel Air contains 50% whole-cluster fruit and 40% of new oak. It has an earthy bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, rosemary and sous-bois scents – a little broody at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and quite juicy tannin. There is a gentle grip in the mouth and a pleasant saline note toward the finish. This is well crafted and should drink well over the next decade.
