Score 94/100 · Drink 2019-2045, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Aug 2016

The 2014 Chablis 1Er Cru Vaillons has a gorgeous bouquet, far superior to the 2015, bridled with scents of apricot blossom, guava and wet limestone that are all beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, very saline in the mouth with a long and persistent finish. You can sense the animation in the mouth. This is a fabulous Chablis Vaillons that shimmers with glee.

At once riper and a bit oakier on the nose than the Monts Mains. Ripe stone fruit aromas are complemented by a saline quality, with firm acidity providing energy but not yet in harmony with the wine's fruit. Finishes very dry, even a bit astringent. An awkward showing today.

Reticent nose shows little in the way of fruit. Quite tightly wound and dry, conveying a lemony edge and hints of peppery herbs. Much less exuberant than usual for this wine at this stage. Will it expand in bottle? (I noted a similar hardness and astringency in my recently bottled sample a year.)
