Score 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2016

(vinified with 80% whole clusters): Dark ruby-red. Brooding, sauvage nose hints at black fruits and game. Surprisingly round on entry, showing strong torrefaction character, then tightens up toward the back and turns distinctly severe, showing a strong stem element and pronounced oakiness. This powerful, soil-driven wine finishes with firm, slightly drying tannins. In an awkward stage today, not showing the attractive juicy character of the Petite Chapelle.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Corbeaux, raised in new oak with 80% whole bunch fruit, has a similar nose to the Petite-Chapelle; perhaps the fruit here veering more to the red side of the spectrum, touches of blood orange surfacing with time. The palate is quite rich on the entry, finer tannins here than the Petite-Chapelle, and more linear though without the same sustain on the aftertaste. It just needs to show more "Pinoté."
