Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Tawse is more austere than Faiveley's, yet there is clearly plenty of fruit tightly coiled up in this wine, perhaps with some whole bunch addition lending tertiary notes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine line of acidity, a little rough around the edges at the moment, but it has a firm backbone on the finish and the density of fruit to suggest that this is a long-term prospect. Tasted September 2017.

Bright, dark red. Wild, musky scents of raspberry, smoked meat, licorice, menthol and earth. Dense, salty, powerful wine with no rough edges to its soil-driven raspberry, smoke and mineral flavors; boasts terrific solidity and extract for the year. The creamy old-vines depth of flavor contributes to this wine's compelling early sweetness. Finishes with serious but utterly harmonious tannins and superb sneaky rising length. While this Mazis is likely to be very long-lived, even today it's not particularly austere.

A lightly dusty quality to the aroma here but not in a negative way. On the palate, ripe and rich in fruit, with real depth and persistence. Chewy and long. (JH)
