Tasted blind, the 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques stood out for its rich, ripe and oaky bouquet of dark fruit preserves, melted chocolate, vanillin and game bird. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with rich structuring tannins and juicy acids, concluding with a somewhat coarsely chewy finish. While this is a success in its style, it's borderline overripe, and I can't be confident in its long-term cellaring potential.

(roughly 25 hectoliters per hectare produced in 2015; Esmonin told me she uses 100% new oak for this cuvée "in principle"): Bright ruby-red. Tight, pure aromas of black fruits, licorice and minerals complemented by subtle oak spices. Dense, sweet and fine-grained, conveying an impression of strong energy and extract to its slightly inky black fruit and violet flavors. Plush and broad but not at all heavy. Best today on the rising, resounding finish. An outstanding, eminently ageworthy vintage for this bottling but even today it's not especially austere.

60% whole bunch. The grapes were very ripe. Very fine and not especially expressive but there is great class here. Polished but depth too. Great undertow. This should make great old bones. Savoury with lovely tannins. (JR)
