Score 90/100 · Drink 2022-2029, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

Bright, dark red. Musky, deep, slightly reduced scents of black raspberry, mocha, licorice pastille, spices and smoky, rocky minerality. Initially plush on entry but tightened up quickly with air, showing slightly reduced licorice, spice, wild herb and medicinal qualities to its black cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. Fine-grained, soil-driven wine with subtle sweetness nicely buffered by saline minerality. The persistent finish features firm, dusty tannins and a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness but no shortage of savory mineral energy. From a high, limestone-rich site that benefits from good sun exposure but is also open to cooling breezes through the combe . I actually marked this wine down a point or two as it turned more peppery and herbal with extended aeration. It could use a bit more flesh as well.

(from a limestone-rich site at the top of Clos de la Roche, strongly influenced by cool breezes from the west): Dark ruby-red. Explosive, high-toned aromas of raspberry liqueur and crushed stone. Densely packed and energetic, in a distinctly sunny but cold style. Strong acidity and a lightly minty impression keep the medicinal black cherry and mineral flavors very tight in the early going. Finishes with noteworthy length but this wine will need time in bottle to expand.
