Score 89/100 · Drink 2020-2035, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2019

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echézeaux is a very pretty wine, offering up a rich bouquet of plums, dark chocolate, spices, candied peel, grilled meats and rose petal. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with tangy acids and fine but firm tannins that assert themselves on the finish. It's less concentrated and flamboyant than the 2015 rendition, cut from more classic cloth, and though it will never quite match the plenitude and dimension of the former wine, it will amply reward bottle age. As usual, this old-vine cuvée is one of the high points of the Jouan range.

Potent, black-cherry fruit with a bitter edge on the palate. Powerful and forthright, with a savoury element that makes this quite tough in its youth. (RH)

The wines of Henri & Philippe Jouan fly under the radar – and, with the current quantities produced (from just three hectares of vines), this is unlikely to change any time soon.
