The 2016 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is more backward than the Côte de Léchet on the nose, but there is still a captivating stoniness here, what you might call a “mean” bouquet but in a positive sense. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, just a little more weight than the Côte de Léchet with a touch of sage and white pepper on the finish, though overall I just prefer the charm displayed by the Léchet. Here there are no funky sulfur notes present on the pear, mineral reduction, iodine and soft sea breeze nuances. There is both good volume and vibrancy to the much more refined middle weight flavors that also possess a seductive mouth feel while delivering fine depth and length on the balanced finale. This is usually the best wine in Tribut's range and so it is again in 2016. (AM)
The 2016 Chablis 1Er Cru Montmains had just been racked from barrel so it was quite difficult to read on the nose. The palate is much more expressive with a fine bead of acidity and a touch more mineral tension than the Beauroy at this early stage, with a tang of orange zest and quince right on the finish. This may well turn out to be the pick of Laurent's 2016s.
