Score 87-90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jan 2018

(this fruit was picked at 11.8% and chaptalized to 12.5%; very little use of whole clusters here; most of the rest of these 2016s feature 20% to 25% vendange entier ): Good dark red. Slightly high-toned, expressive aromas of dark raspberry, brown spices and earth; plenty ripe considering the relatively low potential alcohol. Then silky and round on the palate, conveying good texture and depth as well as a touch of sweetness to its flavors of currant, menthol and chocolate. (This wine showed more texture and depth than the slightly herbal, bitter-edged Chorey-lès-Beaune and the ungiving, tannic Marsannay Les Sampagny that preceded it in my tasting.) The Lécheneauts use about 25% new oak for their village wines.
