(these 60-year-old vines produced a normal 40 hectoliters per hectare in 2016): Healthy dark red. Subtly complex perfume of raspberry, rose petal and spices. Dense with fruits and flowers but also fresh and fine-grained, displaying excellent definition and cut. Really stimulates the salivary glands on the back end, finishing with a firm tannic spine and rising length. (The Morey-Saint-Denis Aux Chéseaux was in a very reduced, leathery stage and was too dry and closed to assess.)

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards has a very perfumed, slightly floral bouquet with a purity that actually reminds me of Hubert Lignier’s style of winemaking. Take that as a BIG compliment. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, fine tannin and one killer line of acidity embroidered through a delectably harmonious finish that is a pure joy. This is one of the best premier crus that I tasted during my visits. Chapeau Cyprien Arlaud!
