Inky ruby. Mineral-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry compote, olive and peony, along with a baking spice nuance and a hint of vanilla. At once rich and lively in style, offering juicy black and blue fruit flavors and hints of floral pastilles, salty olive and five-spice powder. Picks up a smoky accent with air and finishes spicy and impressively long, with a nervy mineral quality and fine-grained tannins adding final grip. 30% new oak.

Attractive, peppery, flower and graphite-like notes here, over black cherries. The palate has a sweep of spicy cassis and peppery, licorice flavors. Long and fresh finish. Drink or hold.

I loved the 2016 Saint Joseph Clos De Cuminaillel. It's beautifully pure and polished, yet has tons of granite induced minerality and a classic profile. Black and blue fruits, peppery spice and violets notes all flow to a silky, seamless, medium-bodied red that will drink nicely on release. Located in the northern part of Saint Joseph, this family-run estate has produced a bevy of high quality, noteworthy wines in both 2016 and 2015. Despite seeing plenty of new oak, I nevertheless find a very traditional style in the wines from Gaillard.

Excellent spiciness on the nose, with juicy blackberry fruit and a long, refreshing, elegant persistence. Refined and balanced – what it might lack in concentration it makes up for with perfume. (RH)
