The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru demonstrates a lot of new oak on the nose that slightly occludes the fruit behind it at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black and red fruit, quite saline with good substance towards the Morey-like finish. This is a gutsy and forthright Chambolle-Musigny, one that merits more cellaring than its peers. Superb. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Charmes was reduced by 40% by frost and includes the same percentage of whole-bunch fruit. This has a feisty nose, perhaps with just a touch more volatility than the other cuvées at the moment and it perhaps needs a little more refinement. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with allspice and a tang of marmalade, structured and quite dense, stocky at the moment but the racking which is due very soon will lend this more sophistication.
