Saturated ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe red and dark berries, licorice and incense, with a peppery quality building in the glass. Offers pliant black raspberry and cherry compote flavors, with a touch of allspice contributing lift and cut. Closes on a smoky note, with repeating spiciness, building tannins and very good length.

A step up over the les Grands Muriers, the 2012 Cornas Lieu Dit Patou is a rocking Cornas that does everything right. Coming from a tiny lieu-dit in the southern part of Cornas, it offers up lots of classic dark fruits, beef blood, leather and game. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured and tannic, it will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 10-15 years of longevity.

Inky purple. Heady aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, licorice and pipe tobacco, complicated by a smoky overtone and a hint of cola. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, with intense blueberry and cassis flavors lifted by a spicy nuance. Closes on a smoky note, with velvety tannins adding shape and grip. This site, which is planted to very old vines, faces due south.
