Score 89/100 · Drink 2025-2040, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2021

Opening in the glass with notes of dark berries, orange rind, spices and peonies, the 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots is medium-bodied, with powdery stem tannins—much like the Gevrey-Chambertin—and lively acids. This, too, will benefit from a little time to unwind.

Steep plot above Clos St-Denis. 60–70% whole bunches. Five barrels. Scented, coriander seed and red-cherry nose that suggests delicacy, but the palate is firmly structured and smoky. Long, perfumed finish. (TJ)

The 2018 Morey Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has a floral bouquet with wild roses and a touch of iris filtering through the red berry fruit. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, the 60–70% whole bunch lending a welcome pepperiness. This is finely structured with freshness from start to sapid finish. Give it a couple of years and it will drink well for more than a decade.
