FINE+RARE, Oct 2021

From just 0.06 hectares, Potel’s 2020 Charmes-Chambertin is deceptively charming and approachable at first. The nose is seductive – scented with florals and pretty berry fruit, and there’s a crunch of fruit on the palate with vibrant acidity. But then the wine asserts itself – the drying tannins providing a framework for the wine’s evolution. There’s serious concentration of black cherry and raspberry fruit alongside the tannins that deserve – and need – time to knit together.

Cask sample. High-toned with very ripe fruit and more than a suggestion of sweetness. But there is good framework too. Still very embryonic and only very slightly bitter and dry on the end. (JR)
