80% whole bunch, 50% new oak. Two barrels. On top of Clos St-Denis on the hillside. 70-year-old vines. Barrel sample. Intense, dramatic, concentrated nose. Almost bitter red-fruit flavours – a bit like a fruit compote that has started to burn – but there is sufficient juice here, in balance with the acid and tannin, that it should eventually be a rather exciting, always dramatic wine. Nice little powdery grip on the end. But it will probably always have that slight bitterness. (JR)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Genavrières 1er Cru contains 50% whole bunch with 50% new oak. This offers a mixture of blackberry and blueberry fruit scents, touches of violet coming through with aeration and covering the whole-bunch influence. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and plenty of red berry fruit laced with white pepper, fanning out toward the precise and sappy finish.
