The 2019 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru has a potent lime and orange cordial-scented bouquet. This is a punter-friendly nose that doesn't convey the complexity of its peers. The palate is well balanced, with a welcome sour lemon note on the entry. There's fine depth with a hint of stem ginger and white pepper that enliven the second half. It's a Chablis that gets better the more you are acquainted with it, and I might leave this a couple more years as it always requires time to open. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2019 Chablis Les Butteaux 1er Cru has a more conservative nose than the Village Crus, austere and reserved yet with fine mineralité and terroir expression. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and superb salinity, touches of shucked oyster shells emerging toward a finish that fans out gently. This deserves a couple of years in bottle to really show what it can do (which is a lot).
