FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

This is a fabulous wine in 2021. There’s 50% new oak and the vines are comparatively young for Heresztyn-Mazzini, at around 40 years old – not that you’d know from the concentration here. The nose is pretty, with chalky minerality and floral aromas – yet the palate is an instant contrast, firm and broody with chewy tannins that need time to resolve and integrate fully with the fruit. Yet despite the structure here, the wine manages to feel ethereal with a red-berried brightness that lifts the mid-palate, building towards a long, mineral finish.

The 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru shows some clever whole bunch addition, combining with the mainly red fruit and not obscuring the terroir expression. Classic Pinot Noir/Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, clean and fresh, marine influence blackberry and raspberry with a liberal sprinkling of sea salt on the sapid finish. This is a seriously fine Clos Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Matured with 60% whole bunches and 50% new oak, the 2021 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a crisp nose with touches of menthol and blood orange surfacing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, a dash of white pepper, cohesive with another quite elegant, brown spice and cracked black pepper finish. Very fine.
