The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru has an exotic bouquet with slightly toasty red berry fruit that lacks freshness and a sense of terroir. Likewise, the palate seems sweet and bitter with some whole bunch here and an attenuated finish. I find this difficult to like, though it might just be at an awkward stage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Top of the vineyard on very shallow soils. 30% whole clusters. 100% new oak, light toast.  Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Sweet red-berried fruits, deliciously concentrated. Elegant and supple on the palate; like so many, will drink soon and well. Good length. (MH)

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Grand Cru is matured with 30% whole clusters fruit. The bouquet is quite floral, well-defined, taut and linear with more mineralité than other cuvées. Hints of Earl Grey emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, silky texture and it gains weight, exerting insistent grip on the minerally, blue fruit tinged finish. Excellent.
