Fresh red-ruby color. Distinctly darker on the nose than the La Brunelle, offering scents of black raspberry and balsamic olive tapenade. Juicy and vivacious, with raspberry and licorice flavors framed and lifted by slightly edgy acidity. Granular, building tannins call for some aging but this wine has the density to support its firm acid/tannin spine.

(this is from the lower, village portion of this climat ): Deep red-ruby. Reticent but pure aromas of black fruits, licorice and mint. Supple and cool, showing a medicinal aspect to the flavors of black cherry, blueberry and menthol. Finishes persistent but quite tight, dominated today by its firm acid/tannin spine and showing a minty edge. This will need patience.

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur (village cru because Roty’s vines are located in “Clos Prieur-Bas”) has a more constrained bouquet compared to the Gevrey la Brunelle ’13, allowing the minerality and terroir expression to filter through more vigorously. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity cutting through the candied ripe cherry fruit. It has a touch of orange peel and spice furnishing the finish. What a delicious Gevrey - one with the substance to age with style.
