From a bottle purchased in the US, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Les Schistes has a classic Côte Rôtie bouquet of both red and black fruits supported by subtle, meaty, iron, and spicy nuances that develop more intensity with time in the glass along with some peppery, floral notes. Coming from a blend of the three lieux-dits owned by the family, this peppery, complex, seamless Côte Rôtie is medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, and a gorgeous finish. You can't go wrong with this wine, and it would be an incredible cellar saver, as it will drink spectacularly well any time over the coming 10-15 years.

Opaque magenta. Powerful, mineral-accented red and blue fruit preserve aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice, succulent herbs and pipe tobacco. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering vibrant cherry and boysenberry, cracked pepper and fresh bay flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Smoothly blends depth and energy and finishes long and focused, with well-knit tannins and resonating spiciness.

Marked by striking aromas of licorice and violets set against a backdrop of black cherries, the 2019 Cote Rotie Les Schistes is the blended cuvée formerly known as "Classique." It's medium to full-bodied, taut and crisp, with a distinct tension between acidity and ripeness and a long, cinnamon and pepper-inflected finish. It should age well for a decade or more.

96% Syrah, 4% Viognier. Organic. Partially destemmed grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts. Two years’ ageing in 228-litre oak, 15% new. Barrel sample. Tasted blind. Bags of fruit here, showing sweet blackberry and violets with a meaty char. Wonderful pure fruit with floral-infused dark fruits and excellent acidity – fine sculpted tannins give great structure and the wine packs real concentration of fruit. Delicious. (AC)
