The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chenevery 1er Cru has the simplest bouquet of Virgile Lignier’s 2017s that I tasted from bottle, perhaps going though some post-bottling dumb phase; touches of rose petal emerge with time. The palate is marked by grainy tannins, quite compact and dense, leading to a grippy, serious and saline finish. It just needs time in bottle.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chenevery 1er Cru, matured with 70% whole bunch fruit, has a more open bouquet than the Faconnières. Flinty, almost charcoal-like aromas filter through the black fruit. The palate is well balanced with some of the finest tannins from the _ domaine_, full of tension and lighter on its feet than the Faconnières, with a more elegant and refined finish if not quite the same complexity.
