Vivid purple. Heady, complex aromas of ripe dark berries, incense, pungent flowers and licorice develop a smoky mineral quality that gains volume as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with sweet, concentrated blackberry and cassis flavors sharpened and given spine by juicy acidity. The impressively long, focused finish emphatically echoes the floral and mineral notes and lingers with impressive, floral-dominated persistence.

The 2013 Cote Rotie comes mostly from the Cote Brune side of the appellation, yet still has a fabulous sense of elegance and purity. Chocolate, blackberry, charcoal, rose petals and violets all emerge from the glass, and on the palate it's medium-bodied, elegant and lengthy, with fine tannin and no hard edges. It can be enjoyed today, or cellared for a decade.
