Boillot's ancient vines have produced three barrels of the glorious 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes, a striking wine that exhibits aromas of cherries, cassis, rich soil tones, citrus rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's voluminous and concentrated, concluding with a long and lively finish. As I wrote last year, this cuvée hails from a parcel planted a century ago, and it contains some 5% small-berried selections of Gamay.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, intermixed with truffle oil and dried blood aromas; quite complex and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening, then fleshy and lightly spiced. It does not quite kick on as I was expecting and seems rather conservative toward the finish, although maybe it has something up its sleeve for later.
