The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is backward and quite masculine with tertiary scents dominating the red fruit. The palate is rather firm and unyielding. Here I am seeking more flesh to develop on the finish. So-so, considering the pedigree of the vineyard. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.'s annual Burgundy tasting in London.

Bright, dark red. Reduced aromas of strawberry and raspberry are lifted by a blood orange topnote. Plush and sweet on entry, showing red berry and iron flavors, then crunchier on the back half, with the fruit currently a bit overshadowed by saline minerality. The tannins are essentially sweet, but this wine will need time in the cellar for its sweet and salty element to harmonize. From soil rich in calcaire and red clay.

A touch leafy and sour-cherry scented, but the palate is more succulent, with fine line and breadth. (AH)

Mid crimson. Relatively light nose today. A fresh, pretty approach. Real life here. Exciting finish. (JR)
