The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a quintessential nose of red and blueberry fruit, pretty with pressed iris and violet scents. The oak is nicely integrated here and serves to lift the aromatics, though it has a glossy veneer that I suspect will ebb with bottle maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite pure in style, spicy with a generous sprinkling of white pepper on the savoury finish. An enjoyable Bonnes-Mares, though like Bruno Clair, the tannins are just a little coarse. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Aromas of mulberries, cherries, violets and spices introduce Hudelot-Baillet's 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and enveloping wine that's velvety and elegantly muscular, with notable mid-palate volume, ripe but lively acids and a long finish. Powerful and youthfully primary, this will need and reward some time.
Much more obvious oak than on the other Hudelot-Baillet wines just tasted but not overdone. Lightly charry, spicy and intense. Firm, super-fine texture, almost velvety already. A delicate but sustained beauty with more restraint overall than I expected from the vintage but seems to be typical of this producer. (JH)
