The 2019 Côte Rôtie Vieilles Vignes offers slightly more dark fruit and minerality as well as a more concentrated yet backward style on the palate. Full-bodied and structured, with terrific purity, it's going to require more bottle age than the base and, but it should have two-plus decades of longevity.

Fruit only from top Côte Brune sites in Landonne, Lancement and Chavaroche aged for 12 months in new and one-year-old barrels then 12 months in foudre. 100% whole bunch. Cask sample. Full, rich, ripe black-pepper northern Syrah aromas. Savoury, mildly salty with very fine 'cashmere' tannins. The oak is still obvious and this seems more full-blown than some wines from this appellation. Needs time to settle down. Tannins are still pretty obvious. Drying finish. Not ethereal at this point. A little sturdier than some. (JR)
