The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys has a clean, precise bouquet, tightly wound at first but unfolding to reveal raspberry, cranberry and pressed flower. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, and lightly spiced with a touch of white pepper toward the finish.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes is showing very well, soaring from the glass with notes of ripe cherries, cassis and plums, framed by a deft touch of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, supple and gourmand, it's a concentrated and enveloping wine underpinned by succulent acids. As I wrote last year, this derives from old vines below Charmes-Chambertin, and the wine's exuberant fruit lends it a close stylistic kinship with that grand cru.
