Score 90/100 · Drink 2024-2039, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

The 2021 Château Cantelys sports a deep ruby/plum hue to go with attractive aromatics of red and black currants, smoked tobacco, and damp earth, with just a kiss of background chocolaty oak. It's rich, medium-bodied, has a supple, layered mouthfeel and soft tannins, all making for a beautifully balanced, elegant, yet delicious Péssac-Léognan to enjoy over the coming 15 years or so.

The 2021 Cantelys has a slightly subdued bouquet with dark berry fruit, mint and earthy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a keen line of acidity, but it just cannot muster sufficient complexity on the finish. This will provide decent short-term drinking.

The 2021 Cantelys is a rustic, foursquare wine. Dark cherry, herbs, menthol, licorice and gravel lend nuance, but it’s hard to get past the angular contours here. Drink this hearty Pessac-Léognan over the next few years.

A strong effort, the 2021 Cantelys offers up aromas of dark berry fruit and spices followed by a medium-bodied, lively palate with good depth of fruit and sweet structuring tannins.
