The 2020 Cantelys is a deep, powerful wine. Inky, savory and a bit burly, Cantelys delivers the goods. The tannins could be a bit more polished, but that is the sign of drought and heat stress in this gravelly site. Blackberry jam, spice, lavender, chocolate and licorice linger on the potent finish.
The 2020 Cantelys Rouge has a ripe nose of blackberry, mulberry and rose petal scents, plus a touch of pitted black olive in the background. This is more immediate than the Le Thil Comte Clary. The palate is smooth and rounded with soft tannins, quite forward and voluminous, and displays a judicious touch of spice toward the finish, which shows just a little headiness. You could almost drink this now, but I would still give it a year in the cellar after bottling.
Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, the 2020 Château Cantelys has the vintage's pure, elegant, balanced style as well as terrific red and black cherry fruits, notes of chocolate and leafy herbs, a deep, layered mid-palate, and ripe tannins. I love its mix of fleshy, layered fruit and remarkable purity and balance.
