Tasted directly after a stunning Vaudésir, the Clos is pretty magical too, coming from vines planted in 1950 on this exceptional white stony terroir. There is an elegant touch to the wood here and a massive raft of white fruit. Shoulders back, guardsman physique, standing tall. Amazing tension to it, still an infant, we are not seeing the full wine yet.

The 2022 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru comes from 0.08ha at the top of the hill, and due to court-noué (a virus that lowers the fruit quality), there is only a single barrel produced. Aged in a used oak from the Chassin cooperage, it has a well defined bouquet, a little nuttier than the Vaudésir or Bougros. The palate is very well balanced with orange zest, peach skin and light lemon peel notes. It gains weight towards the finish that lingers wonderfully in the mouth - a sophisticated Les Clos that will be hard to find (unfortunately).
Cask sample. Cedary overlay on lime and clementine, as well as a light herbal impression. Powerful but so creamy and caressing on the palate, the power is not so obvious but shows itself in a very long finish. Concentration and finesse. (JH)
About the producer
Samuel Billaud started making wine under his own name in 2009, but he is one of the most experienced producers in Chablis, having made wine in the region since 1985.
