Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2003-2010, Pierre Rovani, Oct 1999

Medium-to-dark ruby-colored, the 1997 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux exhibits complex cinnamon, earth, and blackberry aromas. This tangy red fruit, briar, and brambleberry-flavored wine has huge density of fruit as well as copious quantities of ripe tannins - a combination that suggests the potential for a long life. It is medium-to-full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2010+. Importer: Martine's Wines, San Raphael, CA; tel. (415) 485-1800.

Red-ruby. Perfumed, ineffable aromas of black cherry, coffee, game and Cuban tobacco. Very sweet and lush; already offers superb generosity of flavor. The fruit really builds with aeration. Much gentler in structure than the '96, but the substantial ripe tannins build as the wine opens in the glass. An impressive '97.
