Cask sample. Mid cherry red. A little darker fruited and more evident sign of oak than on the Poissenots. Then juicy and delicate on the palate – much more elegant than I expected from the nose. Delicate but with extreme persistence. (JH)

Healthy medium red. The most complex of these premier crus, offering scents and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, licorice and minerals. Silky and fine-grained, conveying a hint of torrefaction (these vines face almost directly south) but also an impression of sappy acidity and inner-mouth mineral tension. This very stylish wine finishes with firm-edged tannins that will require several years of cellaring.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles has a broody, quite tertiary bouquet that will need a couple of years to fully subsume the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, well balanced but just missing a little terroir expression and personality toward the finish.
