The 1997 Langhe Arborina is relatively soft and restrained for the year, yet all the elements are very nicely balanced. This racy, open-knit red offers plenty of Nebbiolo aromatics wedded to racy fruit. All things considered, the 1997 Langhe has aged gracefully, but it isn't quite as impressed as I had hoped given the vintage. In this tasting, the straight Barolo proves to be more interesting.

Ruby-red. Very subtle, nuanced aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, spice cake, lead pencil, tobacco and nuts. Sweet and suave but penetrating, with superb inner-mouth flavors framed by ripe acidity. Lovely balance and freshness for the vintage. Finishes with chewy, slightly elevated but ripe tannins that will require a couple years of bottle aging.
