The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières offers up reductive aromas of clear honey, toasted nuts and exotic fruits, followed by a medium-bodied, ample and satiny palate that's pure and racy, but which lacks the density of the best vintages in this series.

(very little frost here and thus production was similar to that of 2017): Bright medium yellow. Ripe aromas of apricot, pineapple and toasted bread. Concentrated, sappy wine with better fruit retention and more definition and breadth--not to mention a silkier texture--than the Charmes-Dessus. Surprising mineral lift gives definition to the wine's stone fruit flavors. Finishes firm and long, with a repeating hint of ripe pineapple, soft citrus notes and a slightly tannic impression. Very nicely balanced from the start, with a lovely stony underpinning providing energy and grip.

Pale gold. Smoky and beguiling on the nose. Light and lively – so light and lively in fact that it almost tastes as though it should be the Chassagne Cailleret! Lots to chew on. (JR)
