Over the last 18 months, I have enjoyed three bottles of the 1969 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (one of the ironies of contemporary Burgundy is that excellent older vintages are sometimes less expensive than current releases). Two out of the three were superb, offering up a deep bouquet of dark fruits, peonies, mustard seed and burning embers, followed by a full-bodied, muscular and layered palate that's concentrated and integrated, with ripe acids and a long, lusty finish.
