Layered dark ruby. Smudgy and interesting but a bit sweet and occluded in impact. Difficult to see the absolute purity of Hermitage in this wine. (JR)

Sorrel also produces two cuvees of red Hermitage, a regular offering as well as Le Greal (most of which is from Le Meal with about 10% from Greffieux). The dark purple-colored 2007 Hermitage offers sweet aromas of creme de cassis, graphite and subtle smoke, good acidity, a seductive, surprisingly forward style for a Sorrel wine and a heady finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. Sorrel’s holdings in Larnage in Crozes-Hermitage consist of equal parts Roussanne and Marsanne. In most vintages, Sorrel produces two cuvees of white Hermitage. The top white is Les Rocoules, which emerges from that well-know hillside site on the granite Hill of Hermitage. Importer: J. O. A. Imports, McLean, VA; www.jaowineimports.com

Saturated red. Subtly complex aromas of red fruits, violet, minerals and smoky spices. Intensely flavored and detailed, with youthful raspberry and cherry flavors complemented by cinnamon and candied flowers. There's a pinot-like quality to this wine that's very appealing. Finishes sweet and long, with lingering flavors of tangy redcurrant, bitter chocolate and flowers.
