Inky ruby. Pungent, smoke-accented black and blue fruits, pipe tobacco, licorice and cured meat on the deeply perfumed nose. In a ripe and substantial style but not at all lacking for energy, offering sweet cassis, cherry-cola and mulberry flavors and a spicy jolt of cracked pepper on the back half. Youthfully gripping tannins firm the persistent finish, which leaves an emerging floral note behind.

Blackberries, smoked meats, iron, and pepper all emerge from the 2019 Cornas Lieu-Dit Patou, which comes from a great lieu-dit in Cornas. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe tannins, this is burly Cornas will benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar and shine for a decade or more.
From low-yielding old vines, Ferraton's 2019 Cornas Lieu-Dit Patou is richer and more velvety than the Les Eygats bottling. Crushed stone accents cassis on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is plush and ripe, with a slightly jammy finish that seems to lack the complexity of the past couple of vintages.
100% Syrah. Aged for 12–14 months in oak (10% new). Cask sample. Tasted blind. Gamey notes with sweet plum and blue-fruit aromas. A rich palate that combines freshness and power nicely, the tannins are very firm but well managed. An opulent, satisfying style that has bags of dark fruit and a subtle savoury undertone. Powerful, enjoyable and slightly naughty and hedonistic. (AC)
